As if the world has not been rocked enough by superstar deaths in the last twelve months it now transpires that another legend was lost. Brian Pern, lead singer of Thotch and passionate campaigner for mollusc safety, recently passed away following a tragic Segway accident.
Following the sudden death of Brian Pern in a segway mistake, BBC Four is to broadcast a special documentary, dedicated to the musician, celebrating his life and work. The one-off will be directed by the award-winning film-maker Rhys Thomas OBE (self-proclaimed) who will talk exclusively to Brian’s friends and family as well as any random celebrities he can get hold of at such short notice.
If you've enjoyed prog rocker Brian Pern on television you can now get him on DVD too. His three acclaimed series – The Life of Rock, A Life In Rock and 45 Years of Prog Rock – are now available in one DVD edition with added footage of Pern appearing on Top of the Pops. If you love music you will love the pioneering Pern as we see his ups and downs and image changes. This is the man who claims to have invented world music.
Last time we saw Brian Pern he had had a heart attack and it looked like he might be retiring. But you don’t get rid of prog rockers like Pern – played by Simon Day – that easily. He is on TV again for a new series exploring the highways and byways of the rock world.
Due to unforeseen circumstances the forthcoming Brian Pern comeback has been postponed until 2016. Accotding to Pern's publicists the veteran rock star philanthropist has foot and mouth disease and is in quarantine.

Apart from the absence of a mention for Rik Mayall, the other notable omission at last week’s British Comedy Awards was Brian Pern. The lead singer of prog legends Thotch, alias Simon Day, did not figure in the prize-giving for his first trilogy that went out on BBC4 in the Spring. Hopefully this second trilogy will make amends in next year’s gong-fest.
And so the BBC saves the best until last. This second series for Brian Pern is shaping up to be one of the undisputed TV comedy highlights of 2014.
You don’t often get surprises in TV comedy. But it was a genuinely brilliant surprise when Peter Gabriel pitched up on a segway in the final episode of Brian Pern: The Life Of Rock on BBC4 earlier this year. All the critics had been suggesting during the series that Gabriel might be livid if he thought that Simon Day’s spoof prog rocker was based on him. In fact he clearly wasn’t livid, he loved it.
