Opinion: Living the Comedy/Rock Dream

Update 15/10/13. Terrific fun seeing David Brent's debut gig at the Bloomsbury Theatre last night. The melodies made you tap your feet, the lyrics made you clench your buttocks. Read full review here.

TV Review: Louie, Fox

Chuffed to see that Louie is back on the television in the UK. And even more chuffed to see that it starts with a truly great triple whammy - three episodes linked together like a comedy human centipede to make The Late Show Trilogy.

Film Review: Blue Jasmine

It's true. Miracles do happen. At an age when he should be putting his well-shod feet up Woody Allen has made his best film in years. I didn't think it was possible but Blue Jasmine, which has been receiving rave reviews in America and has already created an Oscar buzz for its star Cate Blanchett, really is a return to form. Of sorts, that is.

Theatre Review: Barking In Essex, Wyndham's Theatre

Lee Evans is one of comedy's most versatile superstars. He can fill arenas with his stand-up shows, he can do Samuel Beckett and he was sensational in the stage version of The Producers. So quite what he is doing in this steaming pile of potty-mouthed would-be farce is a bit of a mystery. The late Clive Exton's play, written in 2005, has never been performed before and judging by its opening night I think I can see why.

Opinion: Billy Connolly, Prostate Tests & Comedy

Update 18/9/13 – After this piece about comedians discussing their prostates appeared I received some interesting feedback. I was advised by one reader that I should go back to my doctor and insist on an examination or change doctors. Or maybe I should take the approach of comedian Bob Slayer (pictured below), who ran Heroes @ The Fringe in Edinburgh this summer and has reminded me of a story he told in his act, as follows:

News: Win Free Dave Spikey Tickets

Someone somewhere is surely writing a book on the north-south divide in comedy. And if they aren't maybe I should. It does seem that the north of England dominates when it comes to chatty, mainstream observational humour. Maybe it comes from a long tradition of gossiping over garden fences while snooty southerners keep themselves to themselves. Maybe northerners have to nurture more of a sense of humour because they are the ones that seem to get hit hardest whenever there is a recession.

Preview: The Week Ahead Sept 16 - 22

The poster on the left kind of says it all really. Jo Brand comperes this gig at the Union Chapel on Tuesday in aid of providing greater choice at the end of life. Brand has not done a proper stand-up tour for some time, but she is always an excellent host, having turned her deadpan sardonic humour into something more warm, engaging, accessible but still as funny.

TV Review: The Wrong Mans, BBC2

James Corden has certainly had a rollercoaster of a career in recent years. He has gone from award-winning hero in Gavin & Stacey to zero in his sketch show with Mathew Horne and then back to award-winning hero again with his acclaimed stage performance in One Man Two Guvnors in London and on Broadway. By the law of averages he should be due for another flop. But it doesn't look like backlash number two is going to happen with six-part comedy thriller The Wrong Mans, which he co-created and co-stars in.

Classic Interview: Danny Wallace

Danny Wallace is a journalist and TV presenter and for a while he shared a flat with comedian Dave Gorman. Then one day in the late 1990s he made a drunken wager with Gorman, betting him that he couldn't find lots of other Dave Gormans. Gorman rose to the challenge and as a result the acclaimed show Are You Dave Gorman? was born. Wallace later wrote the 2005 book, Yes Man, based on his idea of saying "yes" to everything for six months, which he doggedly carried out. Yes Man was turned into a Hollywood movie starring Jim Carrey.
