Opinion: Great Show, Shame About The Audience

Great show, shame about the audience. I've thought it a few times recently, particularly at big theatre shows. At arena gigs a few idiots would have to be particularly disruptive to spoil the night for the majority, while at a club gig the comedian can often address the issue and diffuse the situation or make it part of the event.

If there is one thing more frustrating than not being able to get a ticket for a rare sold-out Mighty Boosh gig it's two great causes clashing with each other. This Wednesday there are two top class charity gigs with unmissable line-ups - if you are only going to go to one comedy gig this week try to make it one of these.

Review: Sean Lock, Hammersmith Apollo

What has Sean Lock got to complain about?  A nice regular gig on 8 Out of 10 Cats, occasional forays into other quiz shows when he fancies it and a sell-out live tour, which reaches London this weekend.

Opinion: Sketch v Panel – The Higson v Mitchell Slamdown

I think it would be pushing it to say that there is a raging feud between Charlie Higson and David Mitchell about sketch shows being elbowed out by panel shows. In fact if they have not already met I'm sure that they would get on like a very polite house on fire. But recently in separate interviews, linked together in a piece in the Independent, they appear to have taken slightly different stances on the state of TV comedy. The debate feels somewhat trumped up by a journalist looking for a spat where there isn't one.

Opinion: Social Media v Critics

The reports in the press today of an alleged incident between a comedian and a journalist who had been live tweeting about his performance underline something I have been thinking about a lot recently. That in the age of social media the relationship between performer and critic is changing beyond all recognition.

Opinion: The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of...Amateur Performers

I went to see Adam Hills film his new live DVD at the Hammersmith Apollo last night. There was a hiccup with the ticketing which meant that Hills started an hour late. You'd expect this to put the audience in a pretty humourless mood, but with Hills it had the opposite effect. After a brief apology it was on with the show and everyone was more delighted than ever that the gig had started. Maybe it helped that the great British comedy audience had extra drinking time, but I suspect that it was just Hills' winning personality.

Preview: The Week Ahead Sept 23 - 29

Some strong shows opening at the Soho Theatre this week.

Opinion: Free Comedy – Too Good to Be True?

I had an email from Islington's Angel Comedy Club earlier this week announcing their Comedy Extravaganza starting on September 30th. This is a week of gigs launching their new season. Sorry, I should have added, a week of FREE gigs. Among the acts appearing are Simon Munnery, Daniel Simonsen, Sara Pascoe, Arthur Smith, Aisling Bea, Jarred Christmas, Luke Toulson and Shappi Khorsandi*.
