Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Tommy Tiernan: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

It takes my kids a while to adjust after they’ve seen me. It seems to help if I tell them that its an act and that their dad is just playing a character albeit one with the same face, name and experiences as himself.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Being on the road is a challenge sometimes. You end up having to be wise with your solitude.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Right this minute? Not great.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I almost earn enough to pay all my bills and in an ideal world I’d earn nothing. Just wander about from town to town, talking and being fed.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Perhaps talent is an energy that creates its own opportunities. If you’re good enough you will be given chances. Whether you’re in the right frame of mind to take advantage of them or not is another question entirely. I’m not sure if luck comes into it.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I’m Alan Davies.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

I suppose the Buddha is quite examplary isn’t he?

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (this is to settle an argument with my girlfriend. If you've taken my side thank you in advance)

I don’t have drawers. There are some plastic baskets around the house that I’m supposed to keep my stuff in. I must have been away when that was decided.
