Review: WeGotTickets Musical Comedy Awards Final, Bloomsbury Theatre

The Musical Comedy Awards Final always feels slightly different to most other comedy awards finals and last night was no exception. There were only five finalists, they had longer than the usual 7 - 10 minutes to prove themselves and all the acts performed in the first half, with other acts entertaining the crowd after the break. There was another unexpected difference last night too. No women were in the final.

News: Amusing Album Parodies

Once there was Henry Root, the fictional creation who wrote irate letters to celebrities and printed their polite replies. Now there is Wilf Turnbull and Derek Philpott, two OAPs from Bournemouth who write to pop stars taking them to task for their absurd lyrics and odd outfits. Ex-Police drummer Stewart Copeland and Toyah Wilcox are among those who have sportingly responded. They have had less success with Jimi Hendrix, but that may be because he died in 1970. Their latest project is a series of polite heavy metal abum covers.

News: London Club Goes Free

London comedy promoters We Love Comedy have decided to turn their clubs into free nights. WLC puts on gigs in venues in East London, Islington and Balham, but has been struggling to attract large audiences for a while now so has opted for an "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" tactic.

Preview: Is It Comedy Or Art Or Both?

I’ve always been partial to a bit of art, I’ve always been partial to a bit of comedy and I’ve always been partial to a freebie, so Fancy Meeting You Here is right up my street. This is a free roving comedy show, hosted by Americans Dave Hill (not the one from Slade) and Carl Arnheiter, which takes audiences on idiosyncratic tours of cultural landmarks.

News: Simon Munnery Opens Fylm School

Maverick comedian Simon Munnery is expanding his Fylm project from next week, hosting screen-based comedy nights in which other performers will also try out his innovative technique of sitting in the audience and having his performance projected onto an onstage screen. As Munnery has explained in his previous Fylm shows, the camera amplifies the face in the same way as the microphone amplifies the voice.

Review: Casablanca – The Gin Joint Cut, Theatre Dejazet, Paris

Woody Allen set the benchmark pretty high for comedic love letters to Humphrey Bogart when he wrote Play It Again, Sam. But this playful production has a pretty good crack at both sending up and swooning over the Bogart/Bergman double act, cramming all the action and lots of laughs too into a tight hour.

Preview: The Week Ahead April 21 - 27

Some truly interesting comedy for you this week. Adam Buxton is at the Duchess Theatre for five nights from April 21 as part of the two-week Invisible Dot season, with his acclaimed show Kernel Panic, mixing puerile humour with sophisticated spoofery, David Bowie skits and inspired takedowns of YouTube comments.
