Interview: Seann Walsh

Just before the Edinburgh Fringe started I interviewed Seann Walsh for The Independent on Sunday on the ups and downs of drinking. Walsh has something of a reputation as an imbiber.

Opinion: Edfringe 2013 – The Year of Stand-Up Angst?

Best shows of Week One? No contest really. David Baddiel and Bridget Christie. Two shows that are both very different and yet, in a way, quite similar. One is about fame, one is about feminism. Both performers deal with their serious topics intelligently and insightfully but also remember that they are in the comedy section of the Fringe brochure and make sure that their shows are packed with laughs.

Opinion: Awards – Who Needs Them?

The Edinburgh Fringe 2013 is one week old and already there is talk of awards contenders. I won't name any here and make some people giddy with anticipation and others feel like packing their bags. Needless to say, most people doing a comedy show in Edinburgh will not win a Foster's Comedy Award or even be in the running. Of course awards matter, of course they will make your mum proud, but don't get too downhearted.

Opinion: Injury Time on the Fringe

Update 10/8/13 I've just heard about another performer who has joined the walking wounded. For part of his show in which he explores what it takes to be a legend, Luke Benson took part in the Tough Mudder, apparently the hardest military obstacle course known to man. Afterwards he said "it wasn’t that hard!" but he did not realise that he had fused his hip during the electric shock run.

Opinion: The Wrong Show Must Go On...

I heard a story the other night about a critic who had gone to review immersive  multi-media circus/burlesque show Silencio at the London Wonderground and had not quite got what they bargained for. The show involves donning headphones when you enter so that you hear the commentary individually while you enjoy being bombarded by spoof adverts onscreen and real acts onstage.

News: David Baddiel adds dates

David Baddiel's first Edinburgh run since 1998 is proving to be the hit of the Fringe. His show, Fame: Not The Musical, has garnered rave reviews across the board and he has just announced two extra afternoon shows on Aug 10 & 11. Ticket details here.
