Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Caroline Mabey

Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Caroline Mabey

Caroline’s memory isn’t what it once was. Or so she assumes. Join her as she desperately tries to memorise the 103 allowable two-letter Scrabble words, in this joyful, addled meander through self-help, holistic dance and learning to love the disappointment of truly being yourself. At least that's what her Fringe festival blurb says. You never quite know what you are going to get from Mabey, which is half the fun. Mabey is one of my favourite alt-comedians, coming from a very original, very creative art school left-field place. If you like your comedy Harry Hillishly quirky then get along to her latest show, Quetzels. Or if you like your comedy daft and shambolic you can catch her mucking about with Michael Legge in Michael Legge & Caroline Mabey are Two Stupids at Laughing Horse @ Free Sisters from Aug 16 - 27. Or better still, see both.

Caroline Mabey: Quetzals is at Just The Tonic at The Caves from August 3 - 27. Tickets here.

1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)?

I NEVER check for spinach between my teeth. I like the danger of not knowing.

2. What irritates you?

How often I get hungry. It’s extremely interruptive. Ruins my flow. I’ve only just woken up from my 2 o’clock nap and it’s already time for another lunch.

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

I once missed my 2 o’clock nap. Not pretty.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

Got into the habit of napping. It’s almost impossible to organise anything else around all my Important Duvet Appointments.

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

Did you just use the word “career” in relation to me and comedy? Bruce, I’m flattered. And surprised.
