TV: Inside No 9, Mother's Ruin

Inside No 9 returns for a new series. and, as ever, that means the challenge is on to write about it without giving away any spoilers. Or at least without giving away any major spoilers. So just to give you an idea, this is what the BBC information says about tonight's funny, chilling and occasionally wince-making instalment, Mother's Ruin.

"East End villains Harry and Annie Blackwood were rotten to the core and did some truly horrible things when they were alive. What secrets did they take to their grave? Their sons plan to find out."

Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton play the villains and there's a touch of Pulp Fiction's Bruce Willis and Ving Rhames about the pickle they get into when they try to make contact with the dead in the hope of tracking down some missing loot.

The episode also stars the dream team of Anita Dobson and Phil Daniels, some very sharp implements and the scariest plastic mac since Don't Look Now.

And make the most of this series. The creators and stars Shearsmith and Pemberton have said that they will be taking a pause after the ninth series so there may only be another ten episodes left after this one. when headlines appeared suggesting the series had been axed Reece Shearsmith tweeted: "Recent headlines suggesting "No 9" is axed are of course untrue. Also - it's over a year away that we are going to stop .. (after series NINE) so the stories actually amount to "Programme on now will eventually stop in the future". So don't worry about it." And pointed out: "Also - it's not even news, we said this two series back."

By the way, this episode is billed as the the second of six episodes in the eighth series. If you are wondering where the first one went, that was The Bones Of St Nicholas, which went out at Christmas and of course you can watch on iplayer here. Mother's Ruin will be available on iPlayer here after the broadcast. Sadly there is no Inside Inside No 9 podcast this series so you'll just have to talk about the programme among yourselves after the credits role. Don't have nightmares...

Inside No 9, Thursday, April 27, 10pm, BBC Two.
