Rarely Asked Questions: Stuart Laws

Stand-up, filmmaker and viral Twitter star Stuart Laws' brand new comedy special is released on 20th April by 800 Pound Gorilla Media. The special will be available to watch for free via YouTube from 11pm.

In Stuart Laws is All In, the Ruislip-based stand-up reflects on the day his life changed forever: when he risked everything in a Las Vegas poker tournament. Is he a winner or a loser? Can he burn the candle at both ends? And has he been infected by the Willennium Bug? A show about making difficult decisions, choosing different paths and gettin' jiggy wit' it from the leftfield observationalist and intricate gag-weaver.

The show was filmed at the Machynlleth Comedy Festival in 2022. This is the first comedy special to be filmed at the festival.

Stuart is a comedian, actor, director and writer. Nominated for Best Show at the Leicester Comedy Festival 2021, shortlisted for Comedian’s Choice Best Show at the Edinburgh Festival 2022 and has amassed over 10 million views on TikTok. On TV and Radio, he’s appeared on Live From Aberystwyth Pier (BBC One) and DMs Are Open (BBC Radio 4), written and appeared in the Prime comedy series Grave New World, as well as produced James Acaster's four Netflix specials and supported him on tour.

What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)

I order a large meal and try to eat it as quickly as possible. When I can hear the MC getting the audience to start clapping and getting excited for the next act, I make sure that I take the biggest bite possible of the very well done steak and a jumbo swig of mustard. Then I sprint to the stage and do my skits and jokes. At the end of the show I ask the promoter, really casual like, whether they thought any of the acts seemed like they were anxious, or eating whilst on stage. Never gotten away with it once.

What irritates you?

When you don’t know there’s a bug on you, and then someone tells you there’s a bug on you and then you are aware that a bug knew more than you did for a while, so what’s the point in ever trying to be competent when there are bugs knocking about that have more knowledge about the world than you?

What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

I remember walking home from another sold out show and standing ovation, thinking about how to improve the show for the next audience when I noticed the local orphanage was on fire. Loads of people were running out of the building yelling things like “leave them, it’s too late for the orphans” but I’ve always felt fire is more scared of you than you are of it so I ran in and saved 76 orphans. They also do a wicked coffee in the cafe there, perfect for “me” time.

What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

Started wearing a gilet on stage. And then that became what I do and now I own 11 gilets and I can’t find a way out. Help me.

What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

That I’m still going, like what’s the point beyond narcissism at this stage Stuart? I’ve done stand up on TV once, in 14 years. How did I finally convince someone to put me on TV? I was the director of that series. And even then I had my doubts, expressed them to the producer: “I don’t think this guy’s ready, plus, when I was alone with him he said some awful stuff about me”.
