Opinion: Comedy Gets Tied Up

I was interested to read recently in David Hepworth's excellent blog that Tie Rack had recently gone into administration. Veteran music journalist Hepworth eloquently noted that these days you are more likely to see a rock star wearing a tie than a CEO.

Preview: The Week Ahead Dec 8 - 14

I'm not saying Nish Kumar: Is A Comedian should have won the Foster's Award in Edinburgh this summer, but I was surprised that it didn't get talked about more as a contender for a nomination. Maybe this is a problem of just standing onstage and chatting rather than delivering pyrotechnics, feminism-tinged satire or immersive audience participation.

News: More Tim Key London Shows

Tim Key's dates at the Soho Theatre here have now sold out. But good news - he's added a run of his new show Single White Slut, at the Arcola Theatre from March 10 - 20. Details here. If you don't know Key what on earth have you been doing with your life?

News: The Establishment Club Makes A Day Of It

The Establishment Club, previously revived as a late-night event at Ronnie Scotts is to rise again, but this time as a Sunday lunchtime affair at Bentley's Oyster Bar and Grill. The first event will take place on December 15 and the eclectic line-up includes Scott Capurro (pictured), Professor Laurie Taylor, Man Booker prize-winning novelist Howard Jacobson, Scottish comic Arnold Brown and music from Niggaz with Croissants and other surprise guests.

Opinion: British Comedy Awards Predictions

Earlier this week I was accused of plagiarising a live review that had appeared on another comedy website. I hadn't, of course. It is just that Steve Bennett of Chortle and I have impeccable judgement. I saw on the Chortle homepage that they have predicted their British Comedy Award winners so I thought I'd better predict mine before I read theirs in too much detail.

News: Pam Ann Flies Into London

Arm the doors, cross check and buckle up, the inimitable world-class air bitch, Pam Ann jets into the UK from March 21 2014 with her brand new show, Fly. Regional dates include Bournemouth, Salford, Glasgow and Belfast before landing in London’s West End for a five week run at the Leicester Square Theatre, beginning on March 26.

Review: Barry Humphries, London Palladium

Who invented character comedy? Was it Graham Fellows with John Shuttleworth? Steve Coogan with Alan Partridge, Paul Calf et al? A strong case can be made for Barry Humphries, whose show at the Palladium ends with a video cavalcade featuring all sorts of Humphries creations that I'd never even come across, from hairy hippies to socialist academic, Neil Singleton.

Opinion: Charity Begins On The Stage

Five stars to Lee Mack for being honest about his appearance at the Royal Free Rocks with Laughter benefit on Sunday night at the Adelphi. During his short set the cheeky chappie glanced at the banner behind him and said “Let’s not forget the real reason we’re here tonight. And that’s to try out new material for the tour.”

News: London Run For Julian Clary

Following his appearance at the Royal Free Rocks With Laughter benefit on Sunday, Julian Clary has announced a London run of his new show, Canned Clary, for 2014 promising a mix of music, filth and star guests.

Clary promises a "condensed and completely organic, intimate, queerish show" where the public will be partying up close and personal with the man himself for eight nights at The St James Studio, every Thursday and Friday in March.
