TV Review: Count Arthur Strong, BBC2

Update 14/9/13 – Good to see the first series of Count Arthur Strong getting a quick Saturday night repeat run at 7.30pm from tonight. It could be the perfect feet-up, cup-of-tea Dad's Army-type slot for it. Here's a review of the wonderfully nuanced but also enjoyably broad comedy from when it first went out earlier this year. If you like the sitcom you might also be interested in Through It All I've Always Laughed: The Memoirs of Count Arthur Strong, which are published on November  7.

Preview: The Week Ahead July 1 - 7

When Alexei Sayle decided to return to the stand-up fray last year his wife was worried that he might "dilute the legacy." Sayle had been one of the original angry young alternative comedians and by withdrawing from live performance his reputation had grown. When he was invited to co-compere an Alternative Comedy celebration on the South Bank a few years ago he was the hit of the night and I think that played its part in nudging him back into stand-up.
