The Week Ahead: July 28 - Aug 3

Anthony Jeselnik

Most comedy eyes are currently looking towards Edinburgh, but not everything is Scotland-bound this week. There are still some pretty interesting shows happening in London too. America's Anthony Jeselnik (pictured) makes his UK debut at the Soho Theatre from Monday until Saturday. Jeselnik is one of comedy's latest breed of bleakly dark humour merchants. In fact the AV Club has already dubbed him "the satanic prince of stand-up”. That’s a heck of a billing to live up to – but it certainly makes him worth checking out. I wish I'd thought of it.

Also pushing at barriers is Australia’s Jim Jefferies, who used to be a regular in the UK until he relocated to Los Angeles and carved out a niche for himself in America. Jefferies even had his own sitcom, Legit. It was recently axed, but there is a vociferous campaign to bring it back. In the meantime he brings his vociferous unflinching stand-up to the 02 Brixton Academy on Thursday and Friday.

And if you can't make the Edinburgh Fringe but feel the need for something Fringey the Phoenix Fringe kicks off in London on Saturday with shows from Gavin Osborne, Lee Nelson and Ed Byrne. The festival runs until August 9 – full listings here. Keep your voices down, but if the Pheonix has something that grabs you, who needs Edinburgh?
