Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Sam Fletcher

If you like your comedy quirky and lo-fi Sam Fletcher is your man. In the past the Edinburgh Comedy Awards Best Newcomer nominee and CBBC star has mixed (sort of) magic tricks with David Shrigleyish illustrations and crackpot inventions that would quickly get him thrown off of Dragon's Den. Which would be human giant Peter Jones and that lemon-faced woman's loss. Fletcher is back in Edinburgh with a new show to amuse and amaze his fans. Read his jolly answers and go and see his jolly funny show.

Sam Fletcher: Daftwerk is at the Underbelly George Square until August 28. Tickets here.

1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth)?

I leap up and down on the spot and shake myself out. Sort of like you see the Olympic sprinters do before they take position in the blocks. It helps snap me out of any anxiety-driven funk that may be coursing through me at that moment.

2. What irritates you?

People who make the effort to be not nice. Because it shows that they at least have the energy, but they've actively chosen to be an A-hole.

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

I used to end my first show by doing a needle swallowing trick, and during it I would pretend to hack the needles back up. By the time I was about to put that show to bed forever a friend of mine said "you do have a safety-word for your technician if it goes wrong?", to which I suddenly realised that I hadn't and yes essentially if it had gone wrong no one would know, and they'd think it was a part of the hilarious acting from me.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

See above.

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

That Edinburgh can last a whole month. No one really understands how or why it should. I reckon everyone would be happy just doing two weeks.
