Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Lieven Scheire

There has been a major crossover between science and comedy in recent years, with the likes of Robin Ince, Dara O Briain, Brian Cox and Simon Singh blurring boundaries. But the crossover between science, comedy and Belgium is a new one on me. Lieven Scheire is said to be Belgium’s funniest physicist (insert your own gag here if you must). In his latest show The Wonderful World of Lieven Scheire he discusses concepts such as Einstein’s theory of relativity and is both funny and accessible. You will definitely laugh and you may well learn something too. He has already been on Museum of Curiosity and the No Such Thing As A Fish podcast. Now catch Scheire in the flesh.

The Wonderful World of Lieven Scheire is at Soho Theatre from May 12 - 14 at 9.15pm. Tickets and info here.

1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies and/or check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt and check for spinach between your teeth )?

I try to find the right energy with a balanced combination of pacing, red wine and dark chocolate.

2. What irritates you?

Loud eaters and loud opinions.

3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?

Tell a chemistry pun at a chemistry conference. They have acids.

4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?

The pun about their “reaction” right after that first pun. Didn't help.

5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?

The complex influences of crowd and circumstances on how well a show works or is perceived.
