Edinburgh Preview: Beasts

Beasts

Comedy has a habit of working in cycles. Vic Reeves seems to be channeling the spirit of Eric Morecambe. Lee Evans is evoking Norman Wisdom. And more recently there is Beasts, who seem to be the offspring of Pappy’s. In fact Pappy’s loon Tom Parry directed their well-received Edinburgh show last year in which the three members split up and attempted to make their solo debuts within the same comically chaotic show. It is hard to work out whether Parry was drawn to Beasts because they have a similarly silly sensibility or whether he imposed the silly sensibility on them. What is clear is that they conjure up a spirit of organised mayhem onstage that will appeal to comedy fans who like their sketches equal parts daft and deft. In their new show, Live DVD, they are attempting to record their live DVD. As you can imagine, things do not go exactly to plan.

At Leicester Square Theatre tonight, tickets here, and at The Pleasance from August 5 - 30, tickets here.
